Objectives
The objectives of “Introduction to language technology” are the following:
- to give an introduction and provide insights into a series of applications in language and translation technology
- to provide hands-on experience with a concordancy tool and a translation memory
Topics
Introduction to language technology focusses on:
- translation memories and alignment
- term banks and thesauri
- machine translation
- hands-on sessions translation memories (Wordfast, WinAlign)
- hands-on sessions concordance software (Paraconc
Prerequisites

Final Objectives
The student will be able:
- to critically assess the quality of state-of-the-art language and translation technology applications
- to use basic ICT programs which are relevant in translation technology (translation memories, concordancy software, etc.)

Assessment
Exam: oral exam (3/5) en written examen (2/5)
Details: The oral exam covers the material discussed in the lectures. The practical skills Wordfast, WinAlign and Paraconc are tested in a practical exam.
