Theoretical aspects :
The purpose of this course is to provide a guide to understanding the fundamental principles of the analytical technics of volumetric and instrumental methods.

Experiments :
With selected experiments the students are introduced in the practical aspects of volumetric and instrumental technics and how measurements are translated to reliable quantitative dates. The results are qualified by concepts of quality control. A security report pays attention to the dangers associated to those chemical products.

Theoretical aspects:
Part I : What is Analytical chemistry ?
        - The analytical proces
        - General techniques of sample preparation
        - The processing and reporting of analytical data
        - Automation of analytical analyses
Part II : Classic analytical methods
        - Gravimetric analyses
        - Volumetric analysees : acid-base-, redox-, complexometric- and precipitation analyses
Part III : Electrochemical analytical methods
        - Conductometric analyses
        - Potentiometric concepts
        - Ion selective electrodes
Part IV : Spectroscopic analytical methods
        - Overview of different methods
        - UV-VIS spectrophotometry : basic concepts, apparatus, quantitation
        - Basic concepts of fluoresence spectroscopy
        - Basic concepts of atomic absorption spectroscopy
        - Basic concepts of atomic emission spectroscopy

Experiments :
- selected redox - , complexometric - and precipitation titrations,
- conductometric titrations ; calibration of the glass electrode and potentiometric titrations,
- determination with ion selective electrodes,
- recording absorbance spectra,
- constructing a calibration curve and using it for quantify analytes

The student has a good knowledge of chemical reactions and equilibration reactions and knows the basic properties of common chemical substansces.
The student can perform calculations concerning concentrations and solve simple problems.
For the experiments the student can perform the basic techniques for using a balance, working with a pipet and buret, making dilutions in a volumetric flask.

Final Objectives
The student is supposed to :
- know and reproduce the theoretical aspects of the course,
- know and understand the principals and applications of the different analytical techniques discussed in the course,
- be able to calculate theoretical titration curves and have an insight in their practical applicability ,
- proces and report analytical data,
- work with sufficient accuracy and precision during practical excercises

Teaching Methods
- lectures,
- discussion excercises in guided independant learning sessions,
- demonstrations and excercises.

The student will be evaluated for :
Theoretical knowledge : in an oral examination and a written examination for theoretical exercises (120 pt)
Theoretical exercises ( solving problems with calculations) : with a test after each topic and permanent evaluation for other tasks (30 ptn).
Experimental qualifications : permanent evaluation (50 pt)
