Objectives
The course gives an overview of multimedia techniques and describes some standard algorithms for image and audio processing. The goal of the course is to gain theoretical and practical knowledge at a acedemic level about multimedia systems.

Topics
1. Introduction image processing. Application domains.
2. Basics of image processing: Visual perception, light, beeldacquisition, sampling and quantisation, pixels.
3. Image enhancement in the spatial domain: grey level transformations, histogram, binary operations, filters.
4. Image enhancement in the frequency domain: Fouriertransformation, filters.
5. Image restoration: noise models, noise reduction, estimation of degradation, inverse filters.
6. Color models.
7. Wavelets en multiresolution processing: multiresolution represnetations, one-dimensional wavelets, fast wavelet transform, 2-dimensional wavelets
8. Image compression: compression models, introduction information theory, lossless compression (Huffman-coding, GIF), compression with loss (JPEG,MPEG).
9. Introduction audio and speech processing: audioperception.
10. Filtersynthesis for audio
11. Audiocompression: LPC and compression with loss (vocoder,MP3)

Prerequisites
The course Signal Processing and Multimedia .

Final Objectives
The students moeten should be able te implement multimedia applications in a procedural language. De course pays attention to modern programming techniques and the implementation of complex algorithmes. At the end of the course the students should be able to design multimedia-applications for embedded systems and dedicated hardware.
