Objectives
Study of fundamental physical principles and models in order to explain chemical phenomena.
In depth study of chemical thermodynamics.

Topics
Properties of gases. Three laws of thermodynamics; theoretical deduction and practical applications. Become familiar with concepts of enthalpy, entropy and gibbs free energy. Acquire profound knowledge concerning phase diagrams. The physical liquid surface.

Prerequisites
Competences acquired in introduction courses and chemistry courses.

Final Objectives
Specific competence 1:
To be able to handle correctly theoretical and practical insights from physical chemistry (SC1).
Among others:
Insights in fundamental physical principles and models which explain chemical phenomena.
Insights in chemical thermodynamics.

Specific competence 2:
To be able to apply elementary chemical reaction mechanisms and perform chemical synthesis (SC2).
Amongst others:
To be able to predict the performance of chemical processes by implementing theoretical insights.

General competence 1:
To be able to think and to reason permanently in a critical, creative and scientific way (AC1).

General competence 2:
To be able to implement scientific-disciplinary insights on scientific and/or engineering problems, independently and in a team (AIC1)

Theory (Oral examination with written preparation): 57%
Exercises (Tests): 43%

A weighted average is used to compute the final score for a training item. However, if a student gains a score of 7 or less on 20 on one of the different courses (parts of training items), he proves that his skill for certain subcompetences is insufficient. Consequently, one can turn from the arithmetical calculation of the final assignment of quotas of a training item and the new marks can be awarded on consensus.
