Organic chemistry

Objectives
Provide the students the understanding of the many different chemical forms of the carbon derivatives and the big possibilities of these organic molecules. Organic chemistry offers the basic chemical knowledge for biochemistry and for bioscience courses.

Topics
  • Alkanes, alkenes, arenes and alkynes.
  • Organic functions with oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur and halogens.
  • Acid-base behaviour of organic compounds.
  • Concept of isomers. Stereochemistry: conformations, chirality (R,S- and D,L-notation), polarimetry, cis/trans diastereo-isomers, cyclic derivatives and terpenes.
  • Stereochemistry, characteristics and applications of some polymers.
  • Basic concepts of bio-organic reactions and reactivity of some important functions.
  • Characteristics and applications of some common organic compounds of: the alkanes, alkenes, arenes, alkynes, the alcohols, the ethers, the halides, the aldehydes and ketones, the carbonic acids, the esters of carbonic acids, the polyfunctional derivatives and the aromatic compounds. Organic compounds for phytopharmaceutical use.
The methods for study of the acid-base behaviour of compounds, for purification, synthesis and separation of organic compounds are performed in the practical course. The students learn the stereochemistry with models of molecules.

Prerequisites
Prerequisites of the cluster chemistry of the 1st Bachelor year: basic knowledge of atoms, molecules and types of binding; characteristics of molecules: solubility, melting point, boiling point, polarity, acid/base/salt.

Final Objectives
Good basic knowledge of the characteristics, structure and applications of many common organic molecules. This knowledge is important for later courses as for example biochemistry and bioscience courses.

Materials used
Teacher’s course, background information, scientific and technical literature.
