Objectives
The use of earlier studied analytical technics in chemical, fysical and
mechanical research must lead to a good characterisation of polymers. The
student must be able to recognise or anticipate problems resulting from the
use or transformation of plastics.
Each student has the opportunity to discuss and justify the tests in her/his
final work.So they learn individually as well as in a group.

Topics
Chemical and fysico-chemical tests contains identification, viscosity
measurements, GC analysis of monomers, GPC and thermal analysis.
In the field of mechanical tests we distinguish sample preparation, tensile,
flexion, compression hardness tests.
The thermal behaviour is analysed by VICAT, HDT and burning tests. Specific
tests on semi-final products can be discussed.
The optical tests contain transmission-,reflexion and colour measurements.

Final Objectives

Materials used
A textbook is available and appropriate testequipment is at disposal of the
students.

Teaching Methods
Each exercice is preceeded by an explanation about scope and opportunity.
The students prepare their own samples and tests are elaborated in well
equiped laboratories and workrooms.

Assessment
There is a permanent evaluation of the students during the worksessions.
Reports must be made and are evaluated. A final written test is the final
component of a global assessment.
