Introduction to the use of steel and other metals as building-materials and
to the design, manufacturing and erection of steel structures.



Topics

1. Introduction and generalities
Common characteristics; production of steel; properties; classification
according to chemical structure, application(s) and shape and size of the
building-products.
2. Steel for common use in steel construction
Chemical structure; mechanical properties: strength,toughness and
ductility,hardness; trade products of rolled steel + appliance; mechanical
working; corrosion (general and local); rust (removing, preventing and
protection).
3.Dimensioning of sections of profile metals and other structural elements
Allowed stresses and strains; yield-criterion; load types: traction and
compression, instability, shear, bending, contact-pressure, torsion.
4.Joints
Welded connections (welding techniques, specifications, residual welding
stresses, recommendations for design and construction); connections made
with bolts, rivets or pins



Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the rheology of steel and other metals.
