Objectives
This course aims to give an insight in:
  • legal aspects of urban design and regional planning
  • environmental protection law.

Topics
The legislation in Flanders concerning environmental protection law is studied in great detail.
Most of the attention is paid to the legislation to protect the environment against pollution (water, air and soil contamination, waste production, noise pollution, etc.), and to the requirements (environmental permissions, all sorts of requirements in the VLAREM-legislation) for potentially polluting companies.
Students learn how to work with the code of environmental law.
The part 'legal aspects of urban design and regional planning' starts with a short introduction into the general objectives of the urban planning and zoning law, and a short history of the law of urban planning and zoning.
The course gives an insight in the system and hierachy of urban plans, such as master plans and zoning plans, and in the legal possibilities to realise the urban development plans (urban planning regulation, building licences, building codes, etc.).

Prerequisites
Course of environmental law in the first year.
