Objectives
This course falls in to three modules: sea, short sea and inland waterway transport. The objective of the course is to introduce the student to specific terminology and meanwhile to get acquainted with the legislation, the used documents, the types of carriers,…
Students are expected to be able to carry out assignments properly and to compare the different transport modes in all their aspects so as to choose the best option in function of the load to be carried.

Topics
The course falls into three parts: The first part deals with the international carrier, sea transport. Environmental factors are investigated more closely in relation to other modes of transport. The carrier is investigated more closely and linked to economic activities.

The second part tells about short sea shipping. The advantages/disadvantages are discussed in the frame of the mobility problem.

The third part, inland waterway transport leads to an in-depth study of legislation besides the different types of ships, the calculation of laytime, …
All parts deal with the transport document involved and a flow chart is developed towards other related documents, together with port services.

To achieve the objectives interactive discussion is used as well as lecturing when necessary.
Group work is encouraged and relevant exercises are set. Guest speakers can be invited.

First exam session: marked term paper (30%) and written exam (70%)
