Objectives

To describe fundamental principles and laws of fluids at rest and in motion.
Provide basic understanding of fluid behavior for later engineering design.

Prerequisites

Basic integral and differential calculus. Vector operations. Principles of force and moment equilibrium. Velocity and acceleration. Newtons law of motion. Basic laws of thermodynamics.

Topics

Fluid statics :

Introduction : concepts and properties of fluids. Definition of pressure,
measurement and calculation. Forces of fluid at rest on plane and curved
surfaces. Linear acceleration and
rotational motion. Forces on floating bodies. Equilibrium of a floating
body.

Exercises.

Fluid dynamics :

Fluids in motion. Euler and Bernouilli equations. Energy equations. Forces
due to change in fluid motion. Real fluid description. Dynamic and kinematic viscosity.
