Objectives
The goal of this course is to give the student a total overview of the process stages that are to be considered in the textile spinning mill. Through these lectures a technical explanation is given concerning the fibre processing in a co-ordinated machine sequence from bale opening to yarn production.
To master this subject thoroughly a series of exercises is organised, these will handle questions mainly related to machine design and operation.

Topics
The first part of the course deals with the various systems of defining yarn count. The next part sets out basic operations such as opening, blending and cleaning, according to the most recent principles available. General working principles of the carding machine, combing machine, drawing frame and roving frame are the subject of the preparation before spinning.
After this section the theoretical aspects of inserting yarn twist are studied. Principles of conventional spinning (ring spinning and rotor spinning) as well as unconventional spinning (air jet, self twist, friction, wrap,...) are discussed. Rewinding and yarn doubling are the final steps in coverting raw material into the final yarn bobbin.
The exercises include yarn count and drawing calculations. We might visit a spinning mill to get a close look on the practical aspects of the yarn production.

The textbook has been totally revised (year 2000 version) according to the most recent principles of machine construction and present usage in the spinning mills.
